House passes Waters’ CFPB bill

The U.S. House has passed a bill authored by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) aimed at undoing many of the changes made at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by former acting director Mick Mulvaney.

Kraninger names deputy director, COO

Brian Johnson was named deputy director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau yesterday. Kate Fulton will serve as chief operating officer, and Director Kathy Kraninger announced several other new hires.

Bureau settles with Cash Express

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a settlement with Cash Express, LLC, a small-dollar lender that offers high-cost, short-term loans as well as check-cashing services.

Aequitas fined over ‘predatory’ student lending

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau filed a complaint against Aequitas Capital Management, Inc., over its lending to students of Corinthian Colleges. Aequitas was accused of violating the Dodd-Frank Act’s prohibition against abusive acts and practices.
